I love this so much. I didn’t actually own a TV or have cable when 120 Minutes was on, but every single one of the bands, and almost every song you mentioned was such a part of my life and emerging personality.
And absolutely yes to IRS Records. I completely forgot about them, but who could forget? I think they had a truly outsized impact on a generation, and their influence can’t possibly be overstated, as understated as they were. They were just real. And so was their music.
What a time that was, when it was actually possible to have an underground, when everything wasn’t formulaic and manufactured.
Yes to all of this! I didn’t watch a lot of episodes, myself, but the ones I did catch were hugely impactful. I was actually disc jockeying on the side and always on the hunt for good music. But it was in record stores and magazines.
